Flooring trends during a pandemic

Who would have guessed that 2020 would leave behind such a unique and globally impacting legacy? In the wake of a global pandemic it has been fascinating to us here at Platinum Flooring how this has effected our business, flooring trends and installation requests. While our passports collect dust, our installation teams have repeatedly noted that unusual to pre Covid 19, many clients are now home during installations. Predominantly working in home offices and/or have recently moved into new properties and now renovating or improving their existing homes. Is this because many people are no longer working in the traditional office? And due to what feels like an inevitable move from the city office to more home based work as no real end in site from the dreaded Covid 19, are more people wanting to enjoy their own homes?

Our go to Interior Designer Teneille at Interior by T ( https://www.instagram.com/interiors_by_t/ ) has noted that the current colours of choice are natural, light tones. Flooring which has a natural look and texture seem to be the most requested look of recent times, especially in open plan living properties. Teneille also explains that a natural lighter timber look can also make a room feel lighter, brighter and larger than a dark floor. So who wouldn’t want that?

Interestingly, in the build up to 2020 and therefore pre Covid 19, the majority of flooring requests came in the form of Hybrid, Vinyl and Laminate supply and installations. However, since Covid 19, lockdowns and global pandemic chaos, specialty flooring has become trendy again. Don’t be fouled, people have always appreciated classic installations such as Herringbone, Chevron and parquetry flooring however, lately more people are willing to lift their budget to accommodate these specialty installations. Is this because we are appreciating our own space more and the value in making your home feel as welcoming and warm as possible, while also being an expression of our personal design and feel? Or is it to add more value to our properties when the time comes to move onto your next home?

Whatever the reason we love it. The classic installations such as herringbone always look beautiful, set the tone for a room and never date. They bring a sense of style, class and timelessness to a property. Further more with the advances in technology we now have many options for flooring types which can be used to give this look but without the hardwood pricing. Materials such as hybrid are now being manufactured in herringbone patterns and come with the added bonus of being waterproof and hard wearing. While those that like the feel and look of real timber can opt for engineered timber which is still real timber but without the price tag & necessary maintenance of hardwood. Whatever you choice a classic parquetry installation never dates.

Further to the new interest in parquetry we have seen a significate increase in enquiry and choice of hybrid flooring. This popularity had been building pre Covid 19 but seems to be increasing even during a global pandemic. After all they do come in an array of both modern, traditional and timber looks along with a selection of board sizes. Maybe this is because hybrid is so hardwearing when most of the family are home these days or maybe it’s it’s hypo allogenic properties or waterproof qualities? Maybe it is just the price tag and value for money it offers? Whatever the reason hybrid floors are definitely a recommendation we suggest when considering any new floor.

So whether you are looking at a classic look or a more modern feel there are still many options available but when it comes down to it, pandemic or not, the classics never date. And we are always here to help you make the right choice.
